U.S. durum wheat production is expected to increase this marketing year after drought conditions brought production to its lowest levels in 60 years.
The Economic Research Service shows macaroni wheat is forecast to reach 64 million bushels, which is up 70 percent from the prior year.
Despite those gains, it is still behind the previous five years. Durum wheat grew in popularity during the pandemic when consumers were looking for a cheap meal to make at home. While that demand has lessened, consumer prices for wheat-based products, like pasta, are up this year.
