As combines roll through the fields for harvest, it is crucial to take steps to reduce fire risk with the machinery.
With dry conditions and higher than normal temperatures lingering in certain parts of the country. there is a greater risk of equipment fires.
Iowa State University shares these tips for prevention.
- Inspect and clean ledges or caved-in ares, especially those near fuel tanks and lines.
- Turn the combine off and wait at least fifteen minutes before fueling.
- Keep fire extinguishers in machinery, and, at least once or twice a season, turn them upside down and shake them.
- Keep a shovel in your machine! If a fire does break out, you can use it to quickly throw dirt on the blaze.
