High-speed railway could spell trouble for Ontario’s rural communities

A new high-speed railway is coming to Ontario, Canada, but the new public transit system could actually hurt the surrounding rural communities.

Critics of the plan say the line could displace farmers as it cuts through their land. They the say the Ministry of Transportation’s plan mentions the impacts to indigenous communities, grassland preservation, and invasive plant species - but not farmland.

Several municipalities have asked for alternative rail options to be considered saying they know regional transportation is an issue but they believe there are other options to fix it.
