Today, we highlight International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste.
Industry advocates are highlighting the need for improved technology to better preserve the food supply chain.
Josh Haslun, a senior analyst with Lux Research Inc., spoke with RFD-TV’s own Tammi Arender on the economic loss caused by food waste and new technology can benefit the food supply chain.
“We’re talking about really significant losses here. Fourteen percent of loss between harvest and retail, and then there is further added on to that on the post-consumer side as people take what’s on their plate and move it to waste disposal system,” Haslun said. “What does that translate to? It translates to upwards of a trillion dollars; we’re talking about a massive amount of loss and a massive amount of opportunity. As we think about food loss and waste... there is a tremendous opportunity here as well.”
