How much energy is saved in producing biofuels vs. gasoline?

A new study by the Renewable Fuels Association shows the ethanol energy balance has improved in recent years.

That contrasts the accusations made against the industry, after the recent announcement of summer E-15 sales. The group’s Chief Economist says ethanol provides three-times more energy than it takes to produce and distribute. That is up slightly since 2016, thanks to efficiency on corn farms and at plants, and fertilizer use per bushel is either flat or declining.
