Hurricane Helene could trigger $7 billion in crop insurance payouts

Officials now estimate Hurricane Helene caused billions of dollars in crop losses, reigniting calls for immediate help for those producers.

USDA says across the Southeast, crop losses could trigger as much as $7 billion in insurance payments. The Associated Press reports damage to property could be as high as $26 billion, but analysts like Moody’s say it could be much higher.

Georgia ag officials say every commodity in the state was impacted by Helene, far surpassing damages by Hurricane Michael back in 2018, which caused $3 billion in ag damage.
