Farmers in parts of Central America face total losses after Hurricane Iota, the region’s second major storm this month, slammed into the coast.
Iota hit Nicaraguathis week as a Category 5 storm. Right now, we are still waiting to see how bad the damage is to the ag sector, but coffee and rice harvest will be impacted from the floods and mudslides.
Both are important export crops for the region. Nicaragua is also known for livestock production.
Experts say that the damage could impact planting and production into next year. Iota is now a tropical storm and should move off the coast later today.
