Incoming Disaster Relief: Efforts to help out the ag community after floods and fires

California producers went from a historic drought to devastating floods in a matter of weeks, and representatives want House leadership to step in with a disaster recovery package.

Representative Jim Costa, Jimmy Panetta and Zoe Lofgren sent a letter asking for a package quickly so the rebuilding and recovery process can begin. The Farm Service Agency is also looking for ways to provide better flexibility in its disaster programs for dairies that were impacted in the state.

California faced nine atmospheric rivers earlier this year, with each holding as much water as a hurricane. More than $500 million in damage took place on ag operations.

Disaster relief is also on the way for Nebraska’s ag community.

Nebraska Cattlemen have set up a disaster fund and are asking for donations to help farmers and ranchers that were impacted by the recent fires. The group is now accepting relief applications for those wildfire victims and any ranchers who experienced property loss in the areas are eligible.

Wildfires earlier this month scorched well over 100,000 acres of Nebraska farmland.
