The 2020 Tokyo Olympics will not be held in July as scheduled, committee member Dick Pound told USA Today Monday.

“The parameters going forward have not been determined, but the Games are not going to start on July 24, that much I know,” he said.

Pound said the will announce its next steps soon.

The Olympic Committee faced growing pressure to postponed the games after USA Swimming and USA Track and Field both called for the postponement and Canada, Australia and Germany were among the nations that said they would not send athletes if the games were held.

The IOC said canceling the games altogether is not on the agenda but next steps are not clear at this time.

“It will come in stages,” Pound said. “We will postpone this and begin to deal with all the ramifications of moving this, which are immense.”
