Last week, Carson King said his final goal in his impromptu fundraiser for the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital was $2 million. He finished close to $3 million with a final tally of $2,959,336.

King shared a message on Twitter on Monday thanking those who donated.

“The funds will help us provide the best care possible for our patients,” Suresh Gunasekaran, CEO, University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics, and associate vice president, University of Iowa Health Care, said, in a statement. “We are grateful to be part of such a spontaneous, remarkable occurrence that brought together so many people. One simple act of kindness sparked a nationwide cause behind which we could all unite – helping children heal.”

King’s nationwide fundraiser began with a sign on ESPN’s College Gameday requesting viewers help him replenish his supply of Busch Light. After he was flooded with more than $600 in donations in the first hour, he made the decision to donate the money.
