NASHVILLE, Tenn (RFD-TV) Industrial hemp is gaining support on Capitol Hill, and Kentucky Representative James Comer has authored legislation that would reclassify industrial hemp from a controlled substance to an agricultural crop, a move that he says to spark growth in rural America.
Rep. Comer explains, “The difference in hemp and marijuana is hemp has virtually no THC. THC is what causes the hallucinogenic effect in marijuana. So, hemp is not a drug. You don’t smoke it, like you do marijuana. I’m trying to differentiate between hemp and marijuana, because this is an opportunity for farmers, and an opportunity to create manufacturing jobs in rural America.”
Congressman Comer goes on to explain that the robust demand for CBD oil, a nutraceutical extracted from the hemp plant, presents an especially strong opportunity.
