Labor disputes have caused two of Canada’s largest railroads to shut down

Two of Canada’s largest railroads are shutting down their networks as labor disputes continue.

Canadian Pacific Kansas City and Canadian National Railroads carry millions of tons of freight across the border. As of today, CPKC has officially stopped all shipments beginning in Canada and the U.S.

One analyst believes the stoppages will only last a few days, but the longer they go the more significant the disruptions will be.

The two rails handle approximately 40,000 carloads of freight each day, full of chemicals, forestry products, and ag goods worth nearly $1 billion.
U.S. Farm Groups have penned a letter to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau requesting action.

“The impact of a strike would be particularly severe on bulk commodity exporters in both Canada and the United States as trucking is not a viable option for many agricultural shippers due to their high-volume needs and the long distances for many of the movements.”
