Lawmakers gathered to voice support for the new FARMER Act

Several Senate lawmakers gathered on the chamber floor yesterday to show support for the FARMER Act, which is a bill they say will improve crop insurance affordability at a time when America’s producers are struggling to get by.

“I commend center holdings leadership in introducing the farmers act and proactively addressing the needs of farmers and ranchers who have asked for improvements to the federal crop insurance program. The farmer act includes critical components to modernizing the farm safety net for producers across all regions and all commodities,” said Senator John Boozman.

The FARMER Act would increase premium support for certain policies at the 80 percent coverage level from 68 to 77 percent. Policies at the 85 percent level would increase from 53 to 68 percent. Additionally, premium support for the supplemental coverage option would escalate from 65 to 80 percent, with the coverage level expanding from 86 to 90 percent.

It would also direct the Risk Management Agency to study how to improve the effectiveness of the supplemental coverage option in counties larger than 1,400-square miles.
