Mexican dry beans are in trouble and it could bring good news to American exporters.
The United States Dry Bean Council has heard reports of Mexican production being as low as a bag per acre due to lack of rain.
In Michigan, the average is 26 bags per acre.
While it is unfortunate for Mexican growers, black and pinot bean producers in the U.S. have the chance to step in. In fact, processors in both Canada and the U.S. say that they are overwhelmed with demand and cannot ship them down to Mexico fast enough.
American growers are receiving $52 dollars per hundredweight for black beans, previous years that price was around $40 dollars.
