The 149th running of the Belmont Stakes, also known as the third jewel of the Triple Crown, featured neither of the winners from the two previous races, Kentucky Derby winner “Always Dreaming” and Preakness winner “Cloud Computing,” in the field. It was therefore a foregone conclusion that a new thoroughbred would enter the winner’s circle on Long Island.
“Irish War Cry” was the favorite at three-to-one odds after “Classic Empire” had to bow out. The Todd Pletcher trained horse, “Tapwrit,” came in at five-to-one odds, and was ridden by Jose Ortiz, the brother of last year’s Belmont Stakes winning jockey, Irad Ortiz Jr.
“Irish War Cry” was off to a good start out of the gate, leading almost the entire race – that is, until “Tapwrit” started to make a move around the last turn and pulled ahead on the final stretch to become the 2017 Belmont Stakes champion. Fan favorite and Pletcher-trained “Patch”, the one eyed horse, took third.
This is Todd Pletcher’s third Belmont victory as a trainer and his second win on the Triple Crown trail this year. Watch the video above to see what Todd Pletcher had to say about the win.
