For ag biotechnology, China promises to shorten its GMO application process from 7 to 2 years and be more transparent about the regulatory process. Plus, Chinese officials agree to work with importers if low levels of GMO’s are detected in shipments.
Under the agreement, China agrees to improve SPS measures for ag imports. All food safety, sanitary, and phytosanitary regulations must be science-based. And by next month, the Asian nation will adopt USDA’s public health information system. The system tracks USDA health certificates then notifies export officials.
