Plant-based ups and downs-- Taco Bell drops and McDonald’s expands

We have heard a lot this year about plant-based proteins and how they are a big trend for 2022.

One of the biggest companies is making headlines this week.

First, Taco Bell says that it is dropping Beyond Meat’s carne asada menu item. Turns out, the plant-based steak did not sample well. According to Bloomberg, Beyond Meat fired two employees who were working on the Taco Bell project.

McDonald’s, however, will expand its Beyond Meats offerings next year. The restaurant chain started testing the “McPlant” patty in November. The chain will not say how many stores will start selling it but called the expansion “major”

McDonald’s has nearly 14,000 stores in the U.S. Analysts say a plan to widely sell McPlant would be a boom to the industry, specifically Beyond Meat.
