Planted vs. Base Acres: Changes are coming to commodity program payments

Changes could be on the way for how commodity program payments are calculated.

Senate Ag Committee member, John Thune says he expects there to be discussions this year about tying commodity program payments to planted acres versus historical base acres. Right now, payments are made on base acres to avoid influencing a producer’s decision about which crops to grow.

“That clearly is an issue or reform that makes a lot of sense. Whether or not that could be accommodated within the budget framework that we have to work with remains to be seen,” Thune told AgriPulse.
