Colorado is trying to take legal action against Nebraska over the Perkins County Canal and reservoir system. However, lawyers say that a 1923 agreement between the two states should ensure Nebraska’s right to divert water from the South Platte in Colorado. That water flows into the Corn Husker State to fill a series of reservoirs used for irrigation and hydropower for nearby towns.
The argument has been brewing as development in Colorado’s Front Range has caused river levels to drop.
