Within hours, thousands of people could be without electricity.
If you think your power could go out, USDA’s food safety expert says that the first step to take now is to put anything you can into the freezer.
“A cold freezer, if it is kept closed, will actually keep a cold safe temperature for about two full days,” Chrystal Okonta states. “If it’s half full, it may only be about a day that your foods are going to be staying at a safe temperature.”
USDA also maintains a meat and poultry food safety hotline.
Their number is 1-888-M-P-HOTLINE. They will answer any questions you may have about food safety.
