Producer Price Index falls below expectations

The Producer Price Index is out and has fallen more than analysts were expecting.

Producer prices are down half a percent on the month. Overall, prices are 6.2 percent higher than a year ago.

Food costs were down 1.2 percent during the month of December, and energy costs fell 7.9 percent.

The Producer Price Index measures prices before they are passed onto the consumer.
