Supermarket chain Publix announced a new initiative to help America’s farmers Wednesday.

In a press release, the company said it would begin purchasing fresh produce and milk from American farmers and donate the goods directly to Feeding America.

“As a food retailer, we have the unique opportunity to bridge the gap between the needs of families and farmers impacted by the coronavirus pandemic,” said Todd Jones, Publix CEO. “In addition to providing much needed produce and milk to food banks, this initiative provides financial support to farmers during this challenging time.”

According to Feed America, an additional 17 million people could face food shortages because of COVID-19.
