Shipping conditions on the lower Mississippi River are starting to return to normal as rain has picked up and water levels have improved.
Memphis is seeing a level of nearly 18 feet higher than the record lows that occurred back in mid-October. A very similar rise is also occurring in the lower reaches of the Ohio Valley.
USDA Meteorologist Brad Rippey notes the significance of the moisture falling along the River this month.
“That has come a long way in helping to normalize large operations on the Ohio River and the lower portions of the Mississippi River.”
Rippey adds concerns remain in parts of the upper Mississippi from St. Louis northward.
