Weather will always be a constant variable in agriculture but some lawmakers are looking to ensure producers are better protected from threats like drought.
Several members of the Senate Ag Committee will leave Washington this week for “flyover country” where they will visit with producers in Kansas and Colorado to gather feedback on water issues in the West.
The field hearings coincide with a recent Supreme Court decision on water disputes between Texas and New Mexico over the Rio Grande River. Both states have agreed on measures, such as paying farmers to use less water or abandon their fields. Justices ordered both states back to the negotiating table.
