Senate Democrats urge “Buy American” waiver suspensions in COVID-19 aid

Senate Democrats want “Buy American” waivers to be suspended for contracts awarded with COVID relief money.

They wrote a letter urging President Biden to suspend waivers and commit to our trade partners to renegotiate the terms as quickly as possible before contracts are rolled out.

Wisconsin Senator Tammy Baldwin says that the pandemic has demonstrated risks of long foreign supply chains, like shortages for ventilators, PPEs, and chemical inputs for pharmaceuticals.

President Biden has promised to shorten exemptions to the “Buy American” rules and review supply chains for critical industries. His executive order did not give details.
