Senator Deb Fischer offers legislation for cattle market transparency

Nebraska Senator Deb Fischer is offering an alternative to price transparency in the cattle markets.

Her legislation would make sure there are regionally sufficient negotiated cash trades, offering producer more information on market prices.

This is an alternative to the bill from Senators Chuck Grassley and John Tester. As we have previously reported, their proposal would require packers to buy half of their cattle on the cash market.

The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association adopted their own price discover policy this summer.

Here is their response to Sen. Fischer’s bill: “Our policy dictates that the voluntary framework we are developing be allowed the opportunity to succeed or fail before we can lend our support to regional mandatory minimums for negotiated trade.”
