Why Slower is Better.

Farmers are no strangers to heat waves, but for milk producers, those high temps often mean lost productivity and fewer pregnancies. This issue is on a lot of dairy farmers’ minds, as a drought takes its toll on the Plains and a heat waves continues to surge up the West Coast. Minimizing heat stress among livestock in such conditions makes a dramatic difference on the bottom line.

Walter Boyd, Founder of MacroAir Technologies, explains how his company’s HVLS (high volume, low speed) fans help keep livestock cool, comfortable, and more productive, while avoiding the problems – such as dust, higher electric bills, and undesirable animal behavior – associated with high-speed fans.

“Dairy cattle don’t make milk when it gets too hot, and they don’t reproduce,” explains Boyd. “When it gets to hot the dairy industry has a hard time. So, some of the dairies started putting in high-speed fans in some of the barns and milking parlors.”

But those high-speed fans created issues of their own, like higher electric bills, maintenance, and dust. To compound the problems, animals tended to congregate in the narrow streams of moving air, making heat stress even worse. The solution? A fan that moves larger quantities of air, at low speed, evenly throughout the barn.

Boyd continues, “They’re much more effective than the high-speed fans because, for starters, they more air over a much greater area. You don’t have the dead spots and all that you have with the small high-speed fans. And they’re so economical.”
