UNL is making it possible to quickly identify sick pigs

There is new technology to quickly identify sick pigs in large production facilities. It comes as the ag sector is on high alert from outbreaks overseas.

University of Nebraska researchers are leading the way.

Tami Brown-Brandl, the lead researcher, speaks with RFD-TV’s own Janet Adkison on the problem they are looking to address, how it will help identify sick animals more quickly, and when it will be available.

“Animal caretakers identify sick pigs, and pigs that are ready for market, entirely by sight. So, they walk through the pens and be able to identify those animals that aren’t feeling well strictly by behavior changes, and this presents a huge challenge for even the most experienced and highly trained animal caretakers,” she states.
