Cattle groups are responding with concerns after the House passed the Lower Food and Fuel Costs Act.
The bill includes a special investigator for meat processing facilities, but beef producers say they do not want the federal government to get involved. They say they need help with skyrocketing input costs, not doubling up on the work already assigned to other federal agencies.
Mark Streuli with the Washington State Cattlemen’s Association says it is a delicate issue.
“We are increasingly under attack from regulations that don’t seem to necessarily understand how food production works, how beef production works. And when you add that into a rough economy, we’re concerned.”
The bill heads to the Senate next for consideration and cattle groups are urging those lawmakers to reject it.
