Monday night’s sunset was a sight to behold for the residents of San Antonio, TX. You might have witnessed this beautiful sunset, or maybe you saw it trending online, and wondered what made it so remarkable?
According to the National Weather Service, the fair amount of high clouds in the atmosphere helped create this stunning scene.
The most common form of these high clouds, cirrus clouds, are found at heights greater than 20,000 feet and are composed of ice crystals that form from the freezing of supercooled water droplets.
“When the light reflects off of the high clouds, a nice-looking sunset is created,” said Eric Platt, a meteorologist with NWS.
The US National Weather Service of Austin - San Antonio posted this time-lapse video of the event.
