A new variety of a familiar fruit is getting lots of buzz this week: the long awaited pink pineapple is finally here!
Del Monte says it’s been working on the “Pinkglow” Pineapple in Costa Rica for more than fifteen years. The genetically modified fruit is FDA approved. Del Monte calls it the “Jewel of the Jungle,” and describes the tastes as unique, juicier, and sweeter than a traditional pineapple.
For the time being, the Pinkglow Pineapple is only available online, but you’ll probably have to be “King of the Jungle” in order to afford one: they sell for $50 a pop!
BONUS: If you think $50 sounds like a lot for a pineapple (of any color), consider that in the 17th century they could go for as much as $8,000 each (in today’s dollars)!
