Trade Rep. Lighthizer calls for resetting WTO commitments

The U.S Trade Representative says that commitments under the World Trade Organization need to be reset so Washington can implement stricter “buy American” provisions.

The commitment in question is the “government procurement agreement,” which gives other countries in the agreement a level playing field when bidding on public procurement projects.

The United States is a founding member of the GPA, but Lighthizer says that the U.S. is giving away more than we are benefiting from it.

A 60 day notice is needed to withdraw from the deal, which means the new White House administration would have a small window to reverse the decision if they so desired.
