Turkey Alert: Looks like Thanksgiving dinner will be delicious and cheaper this year!

Despite the resurgence in high path avian flu, wholesale frozen turkey prices are declining just in time for the holiday season.

Prices for frozen whole hens, typically used for dinners, averaged $1.27 per pound back in August. They dropped in September and are now down 43 cents from the same time the year prior.
This year’s September price marked the lowest monthly average since July of 2021, which was just prior to the major HPAI outbreak that led to price hikes last Thanksgiving.

According to USDA, new cases of the disease in early October of this year are not expected to have a major effect on the availability of turkeys this year.
