The USDA has ended a long time ban on logging in Alaska’s Tongass National Forest.
The ban has been in place for nearly 20 years.
It is a long awaited answer to a petition from the “Last Frontier State,” which claims the nationwide rule limited economic opportunities in certain areas.
The Forest Service says that it studied the issue for more than two years, everything from taking no action to a full exemption, and lifting the ban will help with conservation and socioeconomic wellbeing.
Tribal groups call it a broken promise.
