USDA’s Office of Tribal Relations will focus on indigenous foods.
Heather Dawn Thompson is the office’s new director. She says that they will work to find new uses for native crops and plants.
According to Thompson, “Whether that be in the food and nutrition service, for permaculture, and really streamlining that process for native communities to restore their indigenous food source.”
Some examples include native squash and corn. She says that another priority is finding better ways to market and sell those crops.
