Living off-the-grid does not mean you sacrifice luxury. Meet Grant Johnson, a Utah resident, who built his home in a remote mountainside in the southern part of the state.

However, it is not what you think living off the grid would be.

The 5,700 thousand square-foot dream home features a music room, spacious kitchen, and extra guest bedrooms. The home is powered by a 22-foot water wheel that generates electricity for the home and property. Johnson also has a large garden and raises cows, pigs, and some horses.

If you’re thinking about building a bedrock homestead, it could be a long-term commitment.
Johnson says it took him 20 years to build his cave house.
