Weather Woes: Summer heat brings with it concerns of algal bloom poisoning

Summer heat brings with it concerns of harmful algal blooms in freshwater ponds.

These blue-green blooms can be toxic for livestock and farm pets.
Symptoms of poisoning include vomiting, excessive salivation, fatigue, and even liver failure.

The NRCS suggests eliminating access to water sources, washing animals with clean water, monitoring for symptoms, and seeking veterinary help as soon as possible.

While it is not safe for landowners to sample the water themselves, contacting the appropriate state agency for sampling and testing is recommended.
