What does the last USDA condition report of the season tell us about U.S. topsoil moisture?

The final USDA Topsoil Moisture Condition Report showed a record-breaking amount of soil rated short to very short with half of the nation’s farm ground in that category. The previous record was 38 percent set back in 2020.

USDA Meteorologist, Brad Rippey describes where conditions are the worst.

“Our core drought area remains in the nation’s mid-section, including the Great Plains and the Rockies. If you look at those 10 states comprising those two regions, nine of the 10 are reporting topsoil moisture values greater than 50 percent.”

Hopefully the snow we have been seeing across much of the country will help restock moisture levels through winter.
