What happens if lawmakers don’t get bills passed by the end of the month?

Lawmakers have until the end of the month to get several more government spending bills passed. If they do not, we could face a partial government shutdown, and that would have a direct impact on U.S. agriculture.

The new fiscal year begins October 1st, meaning lawmakers have a little more than two weeks to get spending to the President’s desk. If there is a government shutdown, programs around meat and egg safety would continue, but lab services could be affected. Research, conservation, and rural development programs would be placed on hold.

A shutdown would also mean rural homebuyers would not be able to get loans from USDA during that time.
