Which states and crops receive the most government program payments?

Ag economists with the University of Illinois recently took a close look at government crop payments and associated states.

They found seven of the 10 states receiving the most commodity payments are in the South, accounting for 86 percent of all PLC payments in 2021. Georgia took the lead at $74 million and Texas came in second at $46 million. PLC made nearly 100 percent of payments in six states.

When it comes to crops, peanuts took the most government dollars at $166 million in 2021, which is 48 percent of all commodity program payments with the majority coming from PLC. Long grain rice producers took $76 million in commodity program payments the same year with sorghum taking the least at just $1 million.
