A 6-year-old quarter horse has died in Wisconsin due to Equine Herpesvirus.

According to the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, the mare began experiencing symptoms on Dec. 31, 2019 and died shortly after on Jan. 6.

The vaccination status of the animal was not known.

EHV is highly contagious in horses and often the first signs of the infection can go undetected. Symptoms include fever, cough, decreased appetite, depression and nasal discharge.
