Rookie Stetson Wright clinched the all-around world title Saturday, becoming the first roughstock rider to do so since 1998.
Wright, a saddle bronc and bull rider, beat out world champion team roper Clay Smith and 2017 all-around champion Tuf Cooper for the crown.
Wright collected close to $300,000 total on the season.
“I don’t know, I guess I just got lucky all year or something,” Wright said. “It’s pretty awesome. I don’t have much to say, but I’m super happy right now......You can’t control much other than what you do in your event. In the all-around you aren’t competing against them; you just have to do your events. Clay Smith and Tuf Cooper are two of the greatest cowboys I’ve ever seen.”
Wright finished third in the bull riding world standings and fifth in the NFR average.
