Marine veteran Hershel “Woody” Williams passed away Wednesday at the age of 98. He was the last surviving World War II Medal of Honor recipient.

He was born in West Virginia in 1923 and joined the Marine Corps in 1943. Two years later, he found himself with the 1st Battalion, 21st Marine Regiment in the Battle of Iwo Jima.

Williams would later receive the Medal of Honor from President Truman for his actions in that battle.

In a statement from the Woody Williams Foundation on Facebook: “Hershel Woodrow Williams, affectionately known by many as Woody went home to be with the Lord. Woody peacefully joined his beloved wife Ruby while surrounded by his family at the VA Medical Center which bears his name.”
