Suez Canal suspends traffic as container ship remains stuck

International traders got bad news this morning as all shipping traffic was halted in the Suez Canal.

It could take weeks for that beached cargo ship to be freed. The ship is almost as long as the Eiffel Tower is high, and mariners say that it is like a giant beached whale.

The ship got stuck Tuesday during high winds and a dust storm, and it is blocking the only lane for traffic.

Tankers and other ships are backed up on both sides of the canal. Shippers say that if the blockage is not cleared in the coming days, they will consider rerouting vessels around Africa-- that would add a week to the journey.
