Each Saturday we will have tips and instructions from Bill himself as he walks you through “Still Life In Vase.”
Bill Applies The Finishing Touches
Today Bill wraps up his Still Life in Vase. Notice how careful he is to place color exactly where he wants it. He can see the lights and shadows in his mind.
Things to Consider:
- Bill was careful where he placed the colors.
- There is a fine line between finishing a painting and overworking a painting.
- Bill used a very light touch as he added the colors. Pressing hard against the canvas would have caused him to remove the layer underneath, or at least smear it.
- Bill’s thick paint spreads on like peanut butter. The advantage to thick paint is that it maintains integrity and doesn’t “bleed” into the layer of paint below.
- The paint on the canvas pulls the paint from the palette knife. So Bill has a very flat, vertical stroke.
- Notice Bill added color and then went back and worked the colors together.
- He was careful to make the highlight strokes on the table, very vertical.
- Notice that he placed dark colors against light and light colors against dark. Did you see how dramatic it was when Bill added the highlight to the rim of the vase?
We hope you enjoyed this series and you painted along!
Happy Painting!
