Cotton industry leaders are working to increase demand for the product

Cotton is an essential part of everyday life, and American farmers play a significant role in ensuring its availability.

Tony St. James attended the Texas Cotton Ginners annual meeting this year, where he interviewed he head of Cotton Plains Cooperative Association. He stated that they are currently focused on expanding the global utilization of cotton.

“You know, I think the biggest thing that we’re watching right now is just the overall demand picture globally. Demand sort of hovers. Right now, around this 100 and 1300 and 15,000,00 mark globally, we need that number to be over 120 million. Brazil has quadrupled its production since the year 2000 and may not be done growing yet. And so as we looked at how do we keep cotton prices attractive in the face of our production cost? We need to grow our markets and so we need to get as many things going as possible to promote the use of cotton and to make sure that we get global use up somewhere, you know ideally around 130 million bales would probably be something very viable economically long term for our growers,” said Kevin Brinkley.

Brinkley says at the end of the day, it is important that American cotton farmers get as much as they can for their crop, and he hopes new markets will soon open up.
