Don’t feed pumpkins to pigs, according to UK officials

If you still have your leftover pumpkins from Halloween there are some do’s and don’ts when it comes to what you do with them.

The UK’s Department of Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs is warning pig farmers to not feed their pigs pumpkin waste. Most importantly it could pose a serious disease risk, but it is also illegal.

The ban was introduced after a similar issue led to the foot and mouth disease crisis in 2001, which led to the destruction of more than 10 million cattle and sheep.

The ban is there so it does not lead to more diseases, like African swine fever.

Pumpkins can only be fed to livestock if they were not carved in your house and were carved using utensils that have not entered your kitchen before.
