High Diesel Prices Push Farmers to Explore Propane Alternatives

With diesel averaging $6.29 per gallon and propane at $1, some farmers are considering propane-powered irrigation engines and generators to offset costs.

NASHVILLE, TENN. (RFD-TV) — The national average price for on-road diesel edged higher, reaching $6.29 per gallon, according to AAA. That is up from $6.27 a gallon the previous day but one cent below the price recorded a week ago.

Prices remain well above year-ago levels, when the national average was $3.65 per gallon.

Meanwhile, the Propane Education and Research Council says some farmers are looking to propane as a lower-cost fuel option, particularly for irrigation.

The council reports increased interest in propane-powered irrigation engines and generators as farmers evaluate alternatives to diesel and other power sources.

“We’ve had a lot of conversations about irrigation engines. Folks are looking to buy new irrigation engines as a result of fuel prices,” says Newland.

He says some farmers are also moving away from electric pumps connected to the grid and considering propane-powered generators to produce electricity for irrigation systems.

Newland says the price difference between diesel and propane is noticeable, with some farmers paying around $1 per gallon for propane.
