India bans wheat exports to protect its domestic supply

India banned wheat exports on Saturday in hopes to protect its domestic supply as heatwaves are damaging yields there.

Global agricultural leaders criticized the move as the world is already facing a shortage of the crop.

India is the world’s second-largest wheat producer, and its supply was expected to help counter the impacts of the war in Ukraine.
