It is officially fall and that means it is time to taste delicious apples. The Georgia Farm Monitor takes us to one apple orchard for a fruity seasonal update.
In Gilmer County, Georgia you are guaranteed to run across two things: beautiful mountains and apple markets.
Barry Pritchett runs the Red Apple Barn. The Pritchetts have been growing apples since 1965. Their orchard consists of 22 different varieties.
They typically open up the barn around mid-August and stay open until Christmas. Their operation also offers u-pick.
Normally around this time, the Pritchetts would be gearing up for an apple festival, especially with it being a good year crop wise, but with COVID-19 that was put on hold. This festival is a big deal for their community; it brings in almost 100 thousand people a year.
Pritchett is not worried about his business being impacted by COVID. He says that having people stuck inside leaves them wanting to find something safe to do. “I kinda feel like it’s going to level out or either there even may be an increase this year, just because there’s not much to do and coming out to a farm and relaxing and enjoying the things that we do out here; I think it’s a big attraction to people this year,” he states.
